Utah Democrats choose new leaders during convention

[UPDATE]

OGDEN, Utah (ABC4 Utah) - Utah Democrats chose new leaders to represent the party during their State Organizing Convention at Weber State University on Saturday.

Three democratic candidates, all hoping to replace Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz, laid their platform out to voters. In the end, it was fundraising powerhouse Dr. Kathie Allen, who was overwhelmingly nominated to represent democrats in the 3rd Congressional District Special Election.

Allen told Good4Utah's Brittany Johnson that she decided to enter the running to replace the outgoing representative because Chaffetz has "poor public service."

"...Based on the time that I spent working for the congress as a young woman, and based on him ignoring every single email, letter, fax, etc., that I ever sent him -- and he didn't respond to our pleas to investigate the trump administration," said Allen, 3rd District Candidate.

Allen states that her values are "pretty progressive" but doesn't think they are extreme.

"I'm certainly very well {aware} of the problems that face people with health care. I mean, I live that. I know what it's like to have no insurance. I know what it's like to have terrible insurance where you can't get specialty care, and that's what keeps people awake in the middle of the night."

The more heated battle today was about who would run the party. After two rounds of voting, delegates chose Daisy Thomas as the new party chair.

Her first order of business is to win more seats in the house and senate.

"We have a seat to win. We have a lot of seats to win actually. So I think we have to focus really quickly on how we get out the vote, and make sure we are canvassing the whole state," said Thomas, the newly appointed democratic party chair.

Another order of business for Thomas will be to bring back Utahns who have left the democratic party.

"Utah issues are democratic issues and we need to make sure we frame the messaging correctly, because, I think right now, it's just a communication issue. I don't think that people understand that we are fighting for everyone in this state, not just democrats, and we want to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and equally," explained Thomas.
