SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah) - More than 200 people attended a memorial service for Chenwei Guo Monday, one week after his death. The memorial was held at the Institute building on the U of U campus and most of the program was spoken in Mandarin.
Chenwei Guo was a pre-computer science student and would have turned 24 years old on November 5th. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in Provo.
Friends said the services were somber but hopeful and that his parents wanted to convey the message that this is a temporary separation.
Chenwei worked at the International Student and Scholar Services Office and his boss spoke at the funeral. Chalimar Swain said, "He was someone who wanted to make everyone's lives easier and that was apparent in everything he did. To his parents, it is important to know that he was loved and cared for here and we thank them for raising an amazing son."
Austin Boutain has been arrested as a suspect in Guo's death. Police say Boutain is suspected of killing Guo while taking his car and threatening a woman in the car with Guo. The investigation is still ongoing and no official charges have been filed.
Friends of Chenwei Guo have set up a fundraiser to help his parents with funeral expenses; you can donate here.
