Two teens arrested in Bangerter Highway homicide

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (News4Utah) -West Valley City police have arrested two teenagers in connection with a gang-related homicide.

Two 16-year-old boys, who have not been identified because of their age, were booked into the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center on charges of murder Thursday.

Police believe the two teens were involved in the shooting of a 15-year-old boy on January 18. The victim was found dead when officers responded a shooting scene just before 10 p.m. that night.

Police say the victim had been traveling in a van with several friends when they were confronted by another group in a vehicle near 3500 South Bangerter Highway. The victim, the driver, made statements indicating that he knew one or more of the people in the other vehicle, and tried to lose them.

The other driver followed the victim at high speeds, running several red lights, and weaving in and out of traffic near 3500 South Bangerter and 3100 South west of Bangerter. When 15-year-old was forced to slow down due to traffic at 4100 South Bangerter, the other driver pulled alongside the victim’s vehicle and fired multiple shots.

The victim’s vehicle then turned westbound onto 4100 south in an eastbound lane, colliding with another vehicle. No one was seriously injured in that crash, but the 15-year-old and a small dog in the van were killed in the shooting.
