Students perform sunrise salute honoring Sept. 11 victims

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – Dressed in red, white and blue, students at South Jordan Middle School gathered to pay tribute to those who were injured or lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

During a sunrise salute, the choir performed patriotic songs and boy scouts assisted in a flag raising ceremony.

Monday’s event wasn’t only a tribute to 9/11 victims, police, firefighters and service men and women, it was an opportunity to educate a generation of students who did not live through the tragedy.

“I have empathy for those people that were there to witness it,” Ashton Van Der Veur, a student at South Jordan Middle School told ABC4 Utah’s Brittany Johnson.

“It makes me sad to know that people were in that building dying. It’s just a tragedy that happened and it all happened so fast,” added Raina Hennessy, who sings in the choir at South Jordan Middle School.

Members from the South Jordan Fire Department were also at today’s ceremony. Bat. Chief Michael Richards says it’s amazing to see students paying tribute even though they will never know about the attacks first-hand.

“Obviously I was alive during 9/11 and I remember that day. I can remember where I was and for them to not be alive but be able to pay tribute to the first responders that responded on that day and sacrifice their lives is a great thing.”

Students say America is at its best when everyone comes together.

“It makes them realize what people can do when they’re together. They can create themselves to be stronger and as a group you can be stronger than you are as an individual,” said Hennessy.
