State lawmakers take tour of southern Utah

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Utah (ABC4 Utah) For the last two days a legislative fact-finding tour has been happening in southwest Utah.

Lawmakers headed south to better understand issues facing our state.

"As I'm going down the trail I'm hearing all sorts of languages, how unique and how special it is to be apart of this great state and this great park."

Republicans and Democrats, House and Senate. They were all touring rural Utah sites on a 48-hour road trip.

"It's always an interesting experience when you put a bunch of people on a bus together regardless of if you have a D or an R behind your name, and you know, it helps you cultivate relationships," said Rep. Angela Romero, District 26.

They covered six counties on the two-day trek.

"I think for the people to understand that we took our time to come down here and to listen and to visit with them, I think is very important for the state," said Sen. Lyle Hillard District 25.

"As we've traveled these last few days we've had County Commissioners get on every bus and explain the issues that they're facing in their counties; what they need from us," said Rep. Christine Watkins, District 69.

The more than 100 elected officials have visited college campuses and power plans, seen solar panels and wind turbines and discussed water, infrastructure and economic growth. Thursday they visited Bryce Canyon National Park.

"As officials, when we explore other parts of Utah, we see that there are very diverse needs," said Romero.

"One of the things that's unique about our Legislature is that there are more urban Legislatures than rural. So if we want to have a voice and we want them to understand our issues, we need to bring them to where we live, where we work, and where the issues are," said Watkins.
