Sandy residents call daytime sexual assault "scary", "disturbing"

Police search for suspect who attacked a runner in Dimple Dell Gully area

SANDY (News4Utah) -UPDATE: A 15-year-old suspect was arrested Tuesday according to police. He was booked into the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center on numerous charges

Police are searching for a bold and dangerous sexual assault suspect after a Monday afternoon attack in broad daylight on a busy trail in the Dimple Dell Gully area near 10195 South, 320 East.

An approximately 40 year old woman's afternoon run was suddenly and violently interrupted. Afterward she gets the attention of a passerby who calls 911.

"When officers arrived on the scene they did find a female victim reporting a sexual assault," Sergeant Jason Nielsen of the Sandy Police Department told News4Utah.

Police say the woman was running along a path around one o'clock when the man emerged and grabbed her, dragging her down into a ravine where the sexual assault occurred.

"This is an extremely brazen act. This was at 1 o'clock in the afternoon and this park and this footpath is extremely busy," Sgt. Nielsen said. "There's a lot of joggers that utilize this, there's bicyclists, there's even horse enthusiasts that utilize this area all day long."

The victim was taken to the hospital where she was in fair condition but she was able to provide officers with a detailed description of the estimated 20 year old suspect.

"The description that we were given is an African-American male, approximately 6 feet tall, thin build wearing a black beanie with a yellow fish skeleton on it, a plaid shirt or jacket and black white checkered Vans style shoes," Sgt. Nielsen said.

Investigators are looking for surveillance video which shows that man in the area.

Nearby residents who did not want to go on camera called the crime "scary" and "disturbing", one woman telling News4Utah she will no longer run that trail alone.
