Salt Lake City tightens firework restrictions

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- Officials with Salt Lake City Fire Department have modified firework restrictions as Pioneer Day approaches.

Starting July 21st it will be legal to discharge fireworks, but due to dry and hot conditions fire crews have changed the boundaries of restrictions.

The new boundaries are:

  • No fireworks will be allowed east of 900 East; and
  • No fireworks will be allowed west of Redwood Rd.
  • North and South boundaries remain the same; no fireworks are allowed north of S. Temple St., but are allowed going south to the City border.
  • This applies to all fireworks, aerials and otherwise, as the department considers them to be equally culpable in starting fire under the current conditions.

Fireworks can be legally discharged three days before and after Pioneer Day from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. (curfew extends to midnight on the 24th).

The fire department is encouraging the community to attend public firework displays. The Salt Lake City Fire Marshal, Chief Ryan Mellor, said between July 1st and 11th crews saw as many outdoor door fires as there were in the entire month of June.
