09/11/2017 - SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) It's football season and high school football is back in full swing. Jon Oglesby from the Utah High School Activities Association joined Good Morning Utah to talk about how schools are being rewarded for cheering for their teams, and not against their opponents.
Sportsmanship is extremely valuable in the role of providing education-based values through activities. Sportsmanship among all parties in high school activities creates a positive atmosphere where the focus is on the involvement and life skills education of Utah high school students and not a sole focus on winning. The life skills students learn through participation is accentuated best by competing in a fair, positive environment.
The UHSAA has a variety of different programs to help encourage sportsmanship in Utah high school activities. Some of those programs include our Raise the Bar program, which is a challenge out to Utah high schools to engage their entire community in sportsmanship efforts. We also publicly recognize schools that have Zero Ejections throughout the previous school year. We also help to educate students on sportsmanship principles through our Dare2Lead student leadership conference, where a group of student representatives from around the state can take the lessons back to their teammates and classmates.
The UHSAA has a variety of different educational resources on our website at uhsaa.org. If you go to our website, then go to about, click on Sportsmanship and all of the resources are there. Those resources include Public Address Announcements about our "Do Rowdy Right" program, information on how you can educate people within your community about sportsmanship, and other national resources on increasing sportsmanship in education-based activities. These resources aren't just good for high schools but also could beneficial to youth sports league as well, and they're available to access for free on uhsaa.org.
