Lawmakers react to Rep. Chaffetz' announcement

"I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018," said Chaffetz

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) Congressman Jason Chaffetz will not seek re-election in 2018, he announced Wednesday.

Lawmakers and political organizations are responding to the announcement.

Congressman Rob Bishop

"Rep. Chaffetz has served Utah well and we have all worked together as a team for the state. He has nearly two years left to serve on the team, and we’re not letting him off the hook. There is much left to accomplish. I look forward to continuing our partnership. Serving in Congress means asking your own family to sacrifice greatly, and I salute Jason for his broad view on life and concern for his family. I understand his decision for I have set my own timeline. There will always be one more battle to fight and one more issue to resolve, so I truly respect his decision to do what is best for his family."

Damian Kidd, GOP candidate for Congress in Utah’s 3rd District

"This morning, Rep. Chaffetz made an announcement that he would not seek reelection in 2018. I would like to thank Rep. Chaffetz for his service in Congress, and I admire him for his decision to not be a career politician. I wish Rep. Chaffetz the best in the private sector, and I'm glad he'll be able to spend more time with his family."

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Tyler Law

"Chairman Chaffetz' behavior has long been beneath the dignity of the office he holds and he should step down as Chairman of the Oversight Committee immediately. Clearly, Chaffetz crumbled under the weight of the widespread backlash that he's been facing for refusing to do his job, which is a victory for all Americans and will serve as a motivating force for the grassroots."

Democratic National Committee Communications Director Adrienne Watson

"Chaffetz refused to hold Trump and his family accountable for using the Presidency to pad their bank accounts at the expense of Americans.  While Chaffetz and vulnerable Republicans hide from their own constituents and defend an administration under a cloud of a federal investigation, Tom Perez and Sen. Sanders are heading straight to Salt Lake City on Friday to talk and work in solidarity with Utahns fighting back against the first 100 days of Donald Trump's disastrous presidency."

Governor Herbert

"I was as stunned as anyone to learn of Congressman Chaffetz's decision not to seek re-election or any public office in 2018. Congressman Chaffetz has represented Utah in the United States House of Representatives with distinction, and I have appreciated working with him over the last eight years on issues vital to our state. His razor sharp mind, expansive knowledge and gift for communicating will serve him well when he transitions into the private sector. Jeanette and I wish Jason, Julie and their family well in their future endeavors. Undoubtedly, he will appreciate being able to spend more time here in the great state of Utah."

Congresswoman Mia Love

"I would like to thank Congressman Jason Chaffetz for his service in the United States Congress, and to the 3rd district and State of Utah. He has served with distinction during his 4 terms in the House of Representatives, and has become a good friend and colleague. I wish him well.

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Steve Stivers

"Jason Chaffetz has been a valuable member of the Republican team, and we wish him the best as he begins this new chapter in his life. I'm proud to call him a friend."

"Republicans have a deep bench of talented candidates in Utah who are more than up to this challenge. The NRCC is very confident in our ability to keep this seat red in November 2018."

Senator Orrin Hatch

"Congressman Chaffetz has represented the third district with honor and distinction. Throughout his public service, he's been a reliable conservative and a strong voice for Utah values. Elaine and I wish him the very best in his future endeavors," said Senator Orrin Hatch.
