SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – The Salt Lake City Police Department invited members of the media in a for training session Tuesday.
The session focused on the use of force and arrest control. Police officers in attendance heard that their mouths are their number one weapon and that there is so much they can do to calm the situation… or on the flip side, if they use their words wrong the situation could go awry.
“I think, there's a lot of times, this job would be so easy if you could just take emotion right out of it, right? and we try to train our officers that their talking to the badge, talking to the uniform, don't get your feelings hurt, don't take it personally, but as a human being that's really hard to do,” said Officer J. Miller with Salt Lake City Police Department.
Officer Miller say de-escalation is something that is taught in every training session. The purpose is not to trail lethal force out of everyone, but rather, to have the police officers be safe and the community safe as well.
