Dawn McCarthy from Dawn's Corner talks about healthier and safer travel products to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends for nearly 100 percent protection against diseases carried by biting insects, meaning mosquitoes and ticks, you should:
- use an insect repellent for your skin that contains a minimum of 30 percent DEET that is effective for several hours
- treat your clothing with permethrin that is effective through at least six washings
So, the best defense is to combing repellents for your skin and wear permethrin treated clothing when you plan to be outdoors.
Permethrin is derived from the flowers of the daisy chrysanthemum. It is safe and non-toxic. One 8 oz. bottle treats 1 set of clothing but is available in 32 oz. quart bottles as well as a 10 percent concentrate to soak up to 16 sets of clothes.
DEET (N, N-Dimethyl-metatoluaminde) is the most effective insect repellent available. Active ingredient 34.34 percent DEET offers a high level of protection against mosquitoes and ticks.
Travelan is an over the counter dietary supplement that is taken before meals for digestive tract protection. It is all natural and has clinically proven strength.
Medical kits are also essential when traveling to areas that you may not speak the language or if you are in remote areas.
