Police track down shooting suspect after he flees on TRAX train

MURRAY, Utah (News4Utah) –A man is in critical condition after a shooting in Murray City Monday afternoon.

Murray City police were dispatched to the Brickgate Apartments at 154 West 4350 South on report of a shooting just before 2 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Police say the man had been in some type altercation with a male acquaintance, later identified as Tyler Dalton, 18.

Police say Dalton shot once striking the victim in the face. Police say he fled the area and got on a TRAX train at a nearby station.

He was eventually spotted by Unified police and taken into custody a few hours later. 

Dalton initially told police he was "playing with a firearm" and when he set it down it discharged, police records say. However, witnesses told investigators Dalton told the victim "i'm going to shoot you" before the shooting took place.

According to the police report Dalton was found to be in possession of marijuana "which he admitted he had placed in his girlfriend's purse".

Police believe the shooting may have been drug-related however the investigation is ongoing.
