Officer injured in West Valley City shooting

WVCPD officer, two juveniles wounded in the incident

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) Police are investigating after a West Valley City Police officer and two juvenile suspects were shot Tuesday night.

It happened at 7:24 pm at the Village at River's Edge apartment complex at 1251 West 3300 South.

West Valley City police say it started after an officer reported he had been shot. Deputy Chief Matt Elson with WVCPD said the officer's injuries were not life-threatening.

At this time it's unclear who shot whom.

"That's what we don't know. Hopefully that will be uncovered in the investigation as to what happened here on the scene," said Elson.

"I looked out my window and it seemed to be a cop and he was limping past my window. He was yelling for everyone to stay inside," said one resident who did not want to be identified.

Shortly after the shooting Deputy Elson says two juveniles arrived at an area hospital with gunshot wounds. "They arrived in a vehicle that we believe was seen leaving this scene," he said. Their injuries were also non-life threatening.

Elson says the male officer has been with the department for three years. Wednesday officials said the officer was "not on regularly scheduled duty" when he was shot.

The Salt Lake Unified Police Department will be taking over the investigation.

Eastbound 3300 South from Redwood Rd. to 900 West was affected due to the shooting.

This is a developing story. Updates will be posted as they become available.
