WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- Trapped by fire inside their 3rd-story condo, a couple was forced to jump out of the window to survive.
The fire, which was on August 6th, was ruled as accidental. Officials say an explosion occurred. 66-year-old Judy Pedersen was killed because of the blast.
Witnesses watched as Hayley and Shane Stegan fell about 30 feet from their window at the Daybreak Hill Condominiums.
“It was getting really thick inside and we just couldn’t breathe anymore. It was getting hot and it was the only option,” Hayley Stegan told ABC4.
The couple says they were in the kitchen when flames quickly engulfed their balcony, front doors, and the stairs.
Shane says he kicked out the bedroom window and dangled Hayley as far as he could before letting go. He says he remembers watching her drop and collapse as she hit her head on the concrete below.
“I was yelling from the window because I didn’t know if she was okay,” he said.
The couple was then rushed to the hospital where Hayley remains. The Stegan’s lost their two dogs in the fire and everything they owned.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help couple pay for medical bills.
Nine other people were displaced as a result of the fire.
