PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A local group works all year to help one military family — and on Monday, that family received a surprise gift: free mortgage payments for a year.
The group is Operation Bald Eagle. And that group — which aims to help soldiers and their families — calls this cause “Project At Ease."
Jeff Mitchell founded Operation Bald Eagle. He was out shoveling the family’s driveway and placing flags along the walkway on Monday afternoon.
“They have no idea they’ve been chosen,” said Mitchell.
It is all a surprise.
Army Sgt. First Class Luke Webster lives in the home with his kids and wife.
“They found a 10-pound tumor in her,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell and his team got their yard decorated with flags.
Then, they met the Websters at a nearby restaurant to surprise them.
“We know you’ve kind of had a rough year, this last year, and we’re hoping 2017 will be a much different year for ya. We have something really special for ya,” said Mitchell.
The surprise started with a limo ride for the Websters from the restaurant to the home.
A fire truck even drove as an escort.
And then, Mitchell presented the Webster family with a check.
“We’re going to be paying your mortgage this next year,” he said, as snow fell and the Websters stood near their porch.
Luke Webster was overcome with emotion.
“To know that that's been taken care of, out of the goodness of people's hearts — it's beyond amazing,” said Webster.
