Middle school teacher killed in crash near American Fork

AMERICAN FORK, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- A Saratoga Springs middle school is mourning the loss of one of their teachers Tuesday.

Vista Heights Middle School announced on Facebook the man killed in a crash involving multiple cars on I-15 was one of their beloved teachers.

"Our beloved teacher, Dylan Thornton, was killed in an auto accident on his way to work," the post read in part.

It happened around 8 a.m. Troopers say seven cars were involved in separate rear end crashes on northbound I-15 between 500 East and American Fork Main.

The cars had started slowing down because of a traffic stop on the side of the freeway. That's when Thorton  couldn't stop in time and tried to avoid hitting a flatbed truck.

"[He] caught the corner of the truck in the passenger side. He was pronounced dead on scene," Sgt. Todd Royce said.

Sgt. Royce said it serves a good reminder to anticipate problems on the interstate.

"Pay attention to what's happening in front of you," he said. "Anticipate problems happening in the road in front of you. That can help out in a lot  of crashes."

*Utah Highway Patrol originally reported the victim was hit by a passing car when they got out of their car to asses damage from a previous crash, but have since redacted that statement.
