KEARNS, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – Four people are behind bars in connection to a drive-by shooting and a deadly crash in Kearns. Police believe the shooting was in retaliation to another incident in recent weeks.
The shooting and crash happened about 7:00 p.m. Tuesday near 5240 West 5400 South. Unified Police Department Lt. Brian Lohrke said people in a blue truck opened fire on people inside a home.
“I’m sure the folks in the home knew it was coming,” said Lt. Lohrke.
Lt. Lohrke said the people in the home shot back. One of the men inside the truck was hit with a bullet. It's unclear if he was shot by a bullet from inside or outside of the truck.
The driver of the truck took off and crashed into a white car and killed the two people inside. They were not involved in the shooting. They have been identified as Tami Lynn Woodward, 50, and Lloyd Everett Pace, 55. They are both Kearns residents.
A GoFundMe has been set up to support the victims' families.
Police tell ABC4 Utah the victims were in the wrong place and the wrong time.
“You attribute it to gang behavior, I’m going to attribute it to idiotic behavior,” Lt.Lohrke responded when asked about the gang violence in the area.
Two of the suspects got out of the truck, ran off and hid in someone’s yard. With help from witnesses, they were found and arrested by police a short time later. Police also arrested the other two people in the truck.
ABC4’s Brittany Johnson spoke to a woman who has lived in the neighborhood for 42 years. She did not want to be identified but said the increase of gang violence is prevalent. Now that it has come down her street she says it’s time to move.
“I want to get out of here,” she said. “I’ve never had any problems … it’s my kids that are worried about what’s going on here.”
The older woman said the people who live inside the house that was shot at have always been nice to her.
“I feed their dog and take him treats and stuff,” she said.
Police served a search warrant and found multiple guns inside the home in connection to Tuesday night’s shooting. At this time they have not arrested anyone that was inside the home last night.Rosalio Alvarez, Jose Luis Munoz-Lugo, Argenis Daniel Ramirez, and a 17-year-old, are all being charged with felony murder.
Kearns residents, along with Unified Police, say they are fed up with all of the gang violence. They have organized a meeting set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Kearns High School. The meeting is open to the public.
