John Huber Steps Down As U.S. Attorney For Utah District

President Trump requests resignations of 46 Obama appointees

Salt Lake City - SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah News) - President Donald Trump has delivered his signature line to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah John Huber: You're fired.

Huber received a request to resign on Friday and his office confirmed Monday morning that he had tendered his resignation.

He was one of 46 U.S. Attorneys appointed by President Barack Obama recently asked to resign. In the last year and a half, he has been front and center prosecuting Federal cases in our state.

Paul Cassell, a former Federal District Court Judge and a Criminal Law Professor at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, says U.S. Attorney is a high profile position.

" U.S. Attorneys are going to be in the public eye," Professor Cassell told ABC4 Utah News. "For example with big drug cases or immigration cases, gun cases involving a Federal issue."

Professor Cassell  says Huber being asked to resign was expected because U.S. Attorney is a political position.

"President Trump wants to have his team in place," Professor Cassell said. "President Trump is entitled to have his own Attorney General and then U.S. Attorneys around the country who will put into place the policies he wants to have put into place for Federal prosecutions and other things that U.S. Attorneys handle."

The person appointed to replace Huber will have to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

In a statement, Sarah Flores of the U.S. Department of Justice said: "Until the new U.S. Attorneys are confirmed, the dedicated career prosecutors in our U.S. Attorney's Offices will continue the great work of the Department in investigating, prosecuting, and deterring the most violent offenders."

Whoever the new appointee is for this district is expected to place additional emphasis on the President's agenda, things like immigration enforcement.
