2/14/2018 - SALT LAKE CITY, Utah(News4Utah) In honor of Valentine's Day and National Heart Month, the American Red Cross is excited to introduce the Hands,-Only CPR training program. Rich Woodruff, Director of Communications with the Utah Red Cross, joined Emily Clark, with some tips that could save a life.
The Hands-Only CPR training program is now available for health fairs, community programs,
school events, and other appropriate venues. According to Red Cross instructor Ann Evans, "The purpose of the American Red Cross Hands-Only CPR course is to teach untrained bystanders how to perform hands-only CPR. Having more citizen bystanders trained in this simple skill can help save lives by putting more cardiac arrest victims within a few steps of lifesaving assistance."
Recent research has shown that continuous Citizen CPR can be effective in caring for a person with no signs of life when a rescuer is unable, untrained or unwilling to perform full CPR. The Hands-Only CPR training is not intended to substitute for a formal training course. It is intended to provide participants with an educational overview which can help consumers recognize an emergency.
The Hands-Only CPR course can be taught in approximately 30 minutes and has no minimum age
requirements. Students learn how to evaluate an emergency situation and when they should begin hands-only CPR. They watch a video on how to perform the skill and then get plenty of practice performing the skill under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Each participant receives a copy of the Hands-Only CPR Ready Reference. It is a one-page reference that provides step by step instructions with photographs for performing hands-only CPR for use during and after the course. They also learn when it is appropriate to stop CPR and learn AED basics. Then, they receive a completion certificate at the end of the course. The Hands-Only CPR course is available to non profits, school groups, health fairs, etc. at no charge.
