Honoring Babies Buried In Bountiful

BOUNTIFUL, Utah (ABC4 Utah) A Bountiful mother who's son was stillborn 13 years ago chose Memorial Day to start a fundraising campaign to memorialize a special children's area of the Bountiful City Cemetery.
375 infants and toddlers are buried in this section of the cemetery, yet there is no special marker or statue to let people know about this sacred area.
Kyra Dunshee is trying to raise $30,000 to help build a statue like the one in the Lehi Cemetery depicting a mother, father and baby. She often comes to her son's grave and still has tears when she remembers. "It's been 13 years, but it's still such a tender thing to think of the loss of this baby."
Kyra says it's important to remember the young ones who never got to experience life. "Many of these babies died at birth and nobody really knew them except for the close family member and friends, but they are all real people that had an existence and a body and have taken the hearts of their loved ones."
She says a memorial statue would go a long way to help heal the hurt the families feel. She will be getting help from the city to the tune of $40,000 if she can raise the $30,000 in private donations.
She's getting a lot of support from Kendalyn Harris who's on the Bountiful City Council. "When I came here for the first time, as a mother, I couldn't help but be emotional" says Harris.  She continues "as I walked through and looked at the names on these graves, I thought these are not just names, these are little babies and for every single grave, that represents a heartbreak in a family."
Both she and Kyra are confident that Davis County residents will come through with the donations. Kyra says "knowing where we live and how people are here, we have no doubt we will be able to raise all the funds."
There are several ways you can help. You can make a donation at any US Bank branch or go to www.RedBasket.org or go to the Bountiful City website for more information at www.bountifulutah.gov.
