SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah News) - They binded with science. Wearing lab coats and goggles, USANA Health Science convention attendees packed a downtown parking lot Wednesday night in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record.
Dan Macuga, USANA's Chief Communications & Marketing Officer explained.
"As a science based company USANA is trying to break the Guinness World Record for the most scientists assembled in one place," Macuga said.
This was part of a "scientific method" to provide meals to needy children worldwide. The ten dollars for each costume kit goes through USANA's True Health Foundation to the Children's Hunger Fund.
"It's nuts but everybody's enthused," Executive Director of the True Health Foundation Brian Paul said. "All of it, 100 percent of it is going to help the True Health Foundation and help families across the world."
Dave Phillips is the Founder and President of the Los Angeles-based Children's Hunger Fund.
"Only USANA would do this. I think it fits their character. They like to have a lot of fun," Phillips told ABC4 Utah News. "They're going to raise a lot of money tonight and we get to be part of the beneficiary of that...USANA understands the need. Dr. (Myron) Wentz, the founder has a heart to alleviate hunger and suffering in the world and we're just blessed to be a part of it."
The previous record was 489 set last year in the United Kingdom. Last night they easily surpassed that.
Andy Glass served as the Official Ajudicator for Guinness World Records.
"You guys got 893," Glass told the crowd. "Congratulations on the new Guinness World Record title!"
They stopped counting at 893 for time reasons but estimate 4000 nutty professors were on hand for this rather ridiculous record.
"I wouldn't call it silly," Glass said. "I think every record has their own quirks and ins and outs you know. It's complicated to be able to get that many people together, organized, following instructions and all wearing the costume."
Organizers say the event raised more than $57,000, enough to provide more than 225-thousand meals for children in need worldwide.
