Family Dispute Leaves 1 dead, 2 injured in West Valley Shooting

23-year-old suspect was taken into custody peacefully

1/24/2017 - UPDATE:  Charges have been filed against a 23 year-old man who police say shot and killed his father then shot and stabbed his grandparents early Tuesday morning.  A probable cause statement says 23 year-old Michael Vandemerwe was booked in to the Salt Lake County Jail on one count of murder, two counts attempted murder, and one count of discharging a firearm.  All three are felonies.  

The probable cause statement states West Valley City Police responded to the home in West Valley on "report of an armed domestic with a male being physical and belligerent in the house."  The caller, identified as the suspect's grandmother, stated Vandemerwe was yelling and had a shotgun.  The Operator heard shots fired in the home and heard the caller state she had been shot.  

Officers arrived on scene and the suspect exited the house and was taken into custody peacefully, the probable cause statement shows.  Once inside officers discovered the body of 46 year-old Gregory Vandemerwe, the suspect's father.

The suspect "confessed to using the shotgun to shoot two persons in the home and a knife to injure the third," according to the probably cause statement.  

It also states Vandemerwe "made admissions to suggest his intentions were to end their lives."  The probable cause statement reads during the time of the interview the suspect "believed that all three people in the house were deceased or going to be." 

UPDATE:  Police identify victim as the suspect's father, 46 year-old Gregory Vandemerwe.  The suspect's grandfather, 68, sustained a stab wound.  His grandmother, 67, sustained a gunshot wound. Police say her condition remains critical and doesn't look so good.  Police aren't releasing names of grandparents.  Suspect's name will be released when he is booked into jail.  Investigators say they are investigating the claim that drugs may have been the contributing factor that sparked this tragedy. 

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) - One person is dead, two others in critical condition and a male suspect is in custody following a shooting and stabbing at a West Valley City home at 3995 South, 1500 West. 

Police got a domestic dispute call around 5:02 a.m. about people fighting.  The caller, a female — believed to be the suspect's grandmother, stated two people were in a physical altercation.  Moments later dispatch heard gunshots fired and the line went dead.

West Valley City Police along with Unified Police surrounded the home within in minutes.  The suspect, a 23 year-old male, came out of the home and was taken into custody peacefully.

Inside the home police discovered 1 male was dead, and two others were injured.  The two were transported to the hospital in critical condition. 

Police were later able to confirm this was a stabbing and shooting saying multiple shots were fired. 

Investigators have not released information on the weapons used. 

Investigators are still trying to learn what sparked this incident and whether the suspect was living at home or visiting.
