Fallen Officer's Son Gets a Star Wars Surprise

"I was shocked"; 13 year old Jack Barney meets characters from the film

Salt Lake City - SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah News) - The son of fallen Salt Lake Unified Police Officer Doug Barney got an out of this world surprise Friday night at City Creek Center.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens character Kylo Ren met 13 year old Jack Barney at the top of an escalator flanked by two Stormtroopers.

"You. You're coming with us," Ren said to which Jack said, "O.K."

Jack was Star Wars star struck as the trio escorted him into the Microsoft Store, where a few dozen others costumed characters waited.

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes introduced him as "Commander Jack Barney" to an applauding crowd.

Jack got to challenge Darth Vader in a light saber battle, take photos with the other characters and play the Star Wars video game "Battlefront". Minutes later, he was still kind of stunned.

Asked what he thought when he saw the characters at the top of the escalator, Jack said, "I didn't know. I was like O.K. I was shocked."

Microsoft Community Development Specialist Justin Lee planned the surprise event.

"I could see that speechless look on his face," Lee said. "That's when I realized that all the work I've been putting into this with my team and everything we had done made it worth it really."

Jack told ABC4 Utah News about his love of Star Wars.

"Started watching it when I was young with my Dad," Jack said. "You know, good movie."

His favorite character?

"Boba Fett," Jack said. " 'Cause he's not really on a side. Just an outlander."

Microsoft said they did this to show Jack he's not alone while he deals with his loss. His father was with the force and now the Force is with him.

As a final touch, Jack was given a brand new X-Box system, courtesy of Microsoft.

"This is cool," Jack said.
