Elizabeth Smart speaks at BYU

PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - She was kidnapped at age 14 and held in captivity -- raped repeatedly for 9 months.

On Friday night, Elizabeth Smart spoke to hundreds of people about her experience.

"I know exactly how it feels to be devastated. To feel like no one could possibly love you again, to feel like you're ruined," said Smart.

In 2002, Smart was taken from her own home at just 14 years old.

"I know firsthand what it's like to be raped. I was raped every single day for 9 months - sometimes multiple times a day," said Smart.

She spoke about allegations of sexual assault centered on Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

"It's unacceptable, on every level," said Smart.

And she shared her thoughts on the #MeToo social media movement that women and men have been posting to share stories of sexual abuse.

"It's showing people how common this really is. How widespread this really is," said Smart.
