Magna - MAGNA (ABC4 Utah News) - Alexis Gould has lost a lot of weight and all of her hair, the result of six months of radiation and chemotherapy after she was diagnosed with stage 3 neuroblastoma in September.
Her friends, parents and coach say she hasn't lost her positive attitude.
"She never ever is upset or depressed or crying. She's always the one who comforts us," Cyprus High Spinnakers coach Natalie Christensen said. "She's always smiling and wants to make sure we're OK.
Wednesday night she rejoined the Spinnakers for their year end performance.
"Her life has been dancing since she was 3," Alexis' father Kris Gould said. "So being able to come out even for a dance or two, it means the world to her."
"The treatment has already taken quite a toll on her body," her mother Emily told ABC4 Utah News. "To see her do what she loves despite the challenges that she is going through, it's something that I don't know if I can put into words."
Finally it was time for the big moment. After six months of surgeries, radiation treatments and chemotherapy Alexis performed with the Spinnakers again, taking center stage for a routine called "Alexis Strong", set to "Fight Song" by Rachel Platten.
The crowd at the Cyprus High gymnasium gave Alexis a standing ovation at the conclusion of the routine while her Spinnaker teammates surrounded her, hugging her and kissing her bald head.
"It meant so much like just being able to dance again," Alexis said. "Even though it wasn't my best, just being able to dance again was so amazing. It was a great experience...I always knew that I would come back to dancing but I didn't know that it would be in the middle of treatment. I thought I was going to have to wait until it was all over. It was really painful to dance right now but it was definitely worth it because just to be able to dance with my team and the last time we'll be able to dance as a team."
In two weeks Alexis and the Spinnakers will take a trip to Southern California. The day after she returns she'll go into the hospital for a stem cell transplant.
