Christ United Methodists celebrate 125 years

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) One of the oldest non-LDS religions in Utah celebrated a giant milestone. The Christ United Methodist Church turned 125 years old today. The occasion was observed with music and their famous Wesley Bell Ringers.

When they first came to the Valley in 1897 the Methodist Church began in a tent and continues to expand. “There was a lot of conflict between the Mormons and the Methodists” said Senior Pastor Jean Schwien of Christ United Methodist. She said that early Methodists came with the intention of converting Mormons and probably vice versa.

Pastor Schwien said that now 125 years later Mormons and Methodists are partners on so many things. She believes her church continues to grow because they welcome people from all walks of life including the LGBTQ community.
