Banned books week kicks off at Salt Lake County Library

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) - Banned books week kicked off Sunday morning in Salt Lake City, allowing others to enjoy the freedom to read what they want.

Supporters of Intellectual Freedom gathered today at the Calvin S. Smith Library, located at 810 E 3300 South to read out loud passages from their favorite banned books.

Wanda Huffaker, Salt Lake County Librarian, said she encourages people to read books and understand them.

"Read books and understand what they're about, Huffaker said. "Try to understand that you can read whatever you want for yourself and make your own choices, but you really can't choose for anyone else."

Some of the books that have been challenged or banned over the years include Harry Potter, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Huckleberry Finn.
