ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- The attic of the St. George Tabernacle caught fire Thursday morning after the building was hit by lightning during a storm.
The historic building has been undergoing renovations and remodeling. Fire Chief Robert Stoker said some construction workers inside called the fire department after they saw the lightning hit and noticed smoke near the steeple area.
Firefighters arrived and were able to quickly put out the fire.
"Structurally the building is still sound...the majority of the large timber structure is still intact and will not need to be replaced," Chief Stoker said
The chief said earlier that morning crews had already responded to several reports of trees that were struck by lightning. "That was one of our main concerns when we arrived...[this building] is covered in metal scaffolding, and also our ladder trucks--we were a little nervous to put those up with all the lightning that was hitting," he said.
Crews remained on scene for most of the day to ensure the fire did not reignite.
