After dog shot, family pleads for justice

LEHI, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A Lehi family is pleading for help after their dog was shot not far from the family home.

Police are asking for tips, too.

"Why -- why would you do that to my dog?" said Marty Morrill.

His dog, Kaya, was shot sometime Friday evening.

Kaya, a Siberian Husky, has a bullet wound in her shoulder.

On Friday, Morrill says Kaya dug under the fence in the yard and ran away. Early Saturday morning, Kaya had returned -- bleeding and lethargic.

"She'd been shot somewhere, in the middle of the night," said Morrill.

Morrill says there was a trail of blood on the street leading back to the home. But it's unclear where she was shot -- or why.

"Right now we're looking for any information from the public," said Sgt. Thayne Call with Lehi Police.

The department posted about the shooting in a widely-shared Facebook post:

"We have an individual that, most likely, has discharged a firearm in city limits. And that's something that -- not only is the dog our concern, but the public as a whole," added Call.

On Thursday, during surgery, the veterinarian removed Kaya's leg.

"Why was my dog shot, who shot my dog?" said Morrill.

"I'm never gonna know why. Just, I don't know that I'll ever have an answer."

A GoFundMe page is set up to help the family with Kaya's medical expenses.
