After burglary, suspect steals car left running

TAYLORSVILLE (News4Utah)- Two young men are in custody after police say they attempted to burglarize a home and then one of them stole an unattended car warming up.

It started around 11:30 a.m. at home near 2171 West Quailstone Drive (4800 South). Officials say a 16-year-old and 19-year-old Isiah Ortega attempted to kick the door of the home in after nobody answered when they knocked.

The homeowner, who was actually inside at the time, ran out another door unnoticed and called 911.

Just as police officers were arriving in the area, the two suspects were seen running out the back door of the home. Officers chased after them. The 16-year-old suspect was quickly captured, but Ortega took off in a stolen vehicle.

Investigators say while running he jumped into a Lincoln Navigator that was warming up. Officers were able to follow Ortega in the vehicle. Eventually they say he jumped out of the Navigator and took off again, but soon after he was arrested.

Police say the two suspects may have been involved in other burglaries in the area. They are working to gather details on this specific case. It is unknown if the home was randomly or intentionally targeted.

This is a developing story. Updates will be posted as they become available.
