ABC4 Utah helping to bring new shoes to Hildale

HILDALE (ABC4 Utah) - We've teamed up to help a southern Utah town this Christmas--one known for its polygamous roots, and we're hoping you can help too: To give the children of the Short Creek community new shoes for the holiday.

When Sherrie Mackert started Short Creek Family Services in the border towns of Colorado City and Hildale in 2016  she had one goal: To meet the basic needs of the community.

This Christmas they're doing just that with one item she says that's always  out of stock - children's shoes.

"We want to be able to give the children new shoes rather than just donated shoes that have come through that are used," said Mackert.

ABC4 Utah has teamed up with Mackert. Our goal:  To have 500 brand new pairs of shoes for the community that Mackert says is facing significant poverty.

"Eighty-nine point nine percent of the children here in this community are on either free or reduced, which means we have a 90 percent poverty rate here and last time we looked at those statistics we had a 70 percent unemployment." explained Mackert.

Short Creek Family Services helps both those who have left the FLDS faith, and those still a part of the faith.

"Some of the misconception about those that are still in the FLDS culture is that there is a lot of money there. Well, there isn't. If you think of organized crime in a way, you have a hierarchy of the community in that those are the ones that have the money, the elite. We work specifically with the ones that are on the bottom that don't receive much, that are considered unworthy," said Mackert.

ABC4 Utah will be in Hildale and Colorado City on December 12th, to bring the new shoes that have been dropped off at our station, and help give them to the children in need.

"We've actually had children come through our Family Services Center here and cut the toes out of the shoes because they've outgrown them and just don't have the income or resources to get another pair of shoes," said Mackert.

For those here in Southern Utah, you can take the new pairs of shoes to Short Creek Family Services in Colorado City, or to The Narrows Church on 157 E Riverside Drive.

For those in Northern Utah you can bring them to our KTVX Studios during business hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.: 2175 West 1700 South, SLC, UT 84104.
