3,600 books handed out at Bennion Elementary School

Share a Story campaign encourages reading at home

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) -- Thousands of brand new children's books were handed out Friday morning at Bennion Elementary School in Salt Lake City.

Kids got to pick out books they wanted to read as part of 'Share a Story' campaign sponsored by the Molina Foundation. It's goal is to promote literacy and encourage reading at home during spring break and on weekends.

There were so many colorful books featuring Disney themes and characters, enough to fill a library shelf nearly 150 feet long.

The kids at Bennion Elementary School were so excited to pick out brand new books.

"The Molina Foundation we care an awful lot of about under served children and at risk communities. It's important getting the resources necessary to improve reading skills and academic success. We are here to donate the 3,600 books through our 'Share a Story' campaign so they can take them home and share stories with their families," said Dawn Bayer, Molina Foundation volunteer.

"The reason this is so important is because independent reading is one of the most critical things we can do to increase children literacy and their vocabulary. When students are reading independently with their brothers and sisters and families it's so important," said Dr. Tiffany Hall, Library Supervisor for Salt Lake City School District.

"In order for children to become good readers they need access to books for children. To fall in love with reading they need books to share with their families and that's why we are here," said Bayer.

The reading campaign not only gets grade school kids excited about reading but perhaps the entire family.

"One of the heart warming things is watching the kids choose a book for themselves and then saying but I want to choose this one for my brother or my sister so we can read them as a family. It almost makes you want to cry, it's so beautiful," said Hall.

This is the first year the Molina Foundation has brought their Share a Story campaign to Utah. Last year they donated 1 million books nationwide.
