250 Families Served in FLDS Community Food Drive

Short Creek Family Services Holds 4th Event in Colorado City

COLORADO CITY, AZ (ABC4 Utah) A southern Utah fellowship lead by a former Fundamentalist LDS member gives back to twin polygamous towns straddling the Utah-Arizona border.

Dozens of volunteers helped feed struggling families in the highly-impoverished towns of Hildale, UT and Colorado City, AZ.

Thousands of pounds of food unloaded from a semi, sent directly from Phoenix Wednesday.

Strawberries, apple sauce, and piles of bread will feed 250 families in the twin communities were nearly 90 percent of students are on free or reduced school lunch.

Among more than 1,500 people receiving food is Sarah Barlow, who is raising 17 children in Colorado City.

"It's tight, but they never go without," Barlow said.

The food drive helps Barlow make ends meet, since Short Creek Family Services launched the first food drive back in April.

"The community has responded bigger than we have ever anticipated," Sherrie Mackert said, Short Creek Family Services CEO.

A recent partnership with St. Mary's Food Bank aims to provide meals for up to 6,000 people in a community where the average family size is eleven and lead by a single mother.

Organizers say they serve 35 "underground" families still active in the FLDS religion.

"Because of the oppression that they suffer with the fundamentalists, their resources are extremely limited. It's not unusual to see children walking around barefoot without coats in this area," Mackert said.

Because of the secretive nature of the polygamous communities, organizers only ask for is a name and a picture ID. There is no income or address verification to better serve families' needs.

The next food distribution will be Wednesday at 75 North Central Avenue.
