It's National Radon Action Month

Have you tested your home for the deadly gas?

OREM, Utah (ABC4 Utah) - Radioactive gas is seeping into many Utah homes and most families don't know it until it's too late.

As part of National Radon Action Month Habitat for Humanity of Utah County is teaming up with the Utah County Health Department to get the word out about the importance of testing your home for radon.

Every home that Habitat builds in Utah County is radon resistant. In fact, Habitat for Humanity of Utah County is one of only a few home builders that install radon mitigation systems into all of their homes.

"One of the things we say is we're trying to get people out of bad homes and put them into good situations," said Habitat for Humanity of Utah County's Executive Director Kena Mathews. "And if we're putting them into a home that has radon we're putting them into a bad situation."

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that occurs naturally in soil and rocks through the breakdown of uranium. It's the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and here in Utah it's responsible for about 100 deaths a year. 1 in every 3 Utah homes that have been tested has levels of radon above federal safety guidelines.

You can live next door to someone who's very high and you can be very low, and so the only way you can really do this is by testing," said Mathews.

That's why Habitat for Humanity has teamed up with the Utah County Health Department to help ensure that every Utah family tests their home for this deadly gas.

Utah County Health department Environmental Health Educator Andrea Jensen said, "If we can prevent hearing another story about someone that's never smoked a day in their life and they were diagnosed with lung cancer."

A simple  test could save your life or the life of a loved one.

Radon test kits are being sold at Habitat ReStores in Orem and Spanish Fork for $6.00. Test kits are also available online at www.habitatuc.org/radon.htm
