Salt Lake City plans New Years celebration

SALT LAKE CITY, (ABC4 News) - The Salt Lake Downtown Alliance has announced this years EVE 2013 will have a theme of light, art and sound. The event will continue the annual three-day celebration and will take place December 29-31.

Here is what you can look forward to the year at EVE 2013.

“EVE is more than just a party – it’s an expression of optimism, creativity and community,” said Jason Mathis, executive director for the Downtown Alliance, in a release to ABC 4 News. “EVE is unique to Utah. It was created to build on our Olympic legacy, as we celebrate the dawning of a healthier and happier new year. It is designed to break down barriers, build relationships and celebrate our shared humanity. No matter who you are, you are welcomed at EVE.”

EVE is presented by Wells Fargo and the Downtown Alliance, along with community partners including Comcast, Rio Tinto, Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-Day Saints, Intermountain Live Well, Salt Lake City, Utah Tobacco Quit Line, Harmons, Coca-Cola, City Creek Center, City Weekly, Zoo Arts & Parks and Now Playing Utah.

Performing Artist Bios

Nick Waterhouse

Nick Waterhouse is a 26 year-old child of the 50s and 60s. His passion for retro rhythm and blues runs deeper than his relative youth might suggest. The Los Angeles resident is a real Earth angel crafting melodies whose sultry swagger belies the tracks of his tears. For his debut album, Time’s All Gone, Waterhouse eschewed digital technology and recorded straight to tape for an expansive, vintage sound that struts with seemingly effortless cool. Drawn to the primal, spooky quality of albums by artists like Them, Waterhouse punctuates his mostly steady grooves with the occasional yelp and holler. A real wild thing, he’ll make your heart sing along with backing band, the Tarots.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band

Thirty-five years into their career, New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band continues to both embrace and swerve from tradition with a horn-powered musical gumbo flavored by jazz, R&B, funk, Afro-Latino and occasional hip-hop grooves. Twenty Dozen, their latest album and first recording in six years, honors their Crescent City roots with a cover of “When The Saints Go Marching In,” joining an inventive reimagining of Rhianna’s “Don’t Stop the Music,” alongside original material that will make your hips shake and your soul sing.

Blind Pilot

Since their humble beginnings as a young duo touring the West Coast by bicycle to their current status as a six-piece ensemble hitting the country by vintage school bus, Portland’s Blind Pilot has maintained an eco-conscious approach to promoting music that similarly gives back more energy than it takes to produce. The sextet extracts just what it needs from hammered dulcimers, banjos, vibes, keyboard, harmonium, guitars, bass, drums and vocals to create rich, vibrant folk music. Their latest release, We Are The Tide, is stunning. However, Blind Pilot is clearly powered by people who love to perform. Their live show is truly moving.

!!! (Chk, Chk, Chk)

When Nic Offer first started performing as lead singer of !!! (aka Chk Chk Chk), the wiry artist simply lost himself in the music. These days, it’s obvious Offer (aka Nicasso, the Wonderful) puts a little more thought into the explosive dance moves that are part and parcel of the band’s live show.  The excitable New York-by-way-of-Sacramento collective makes every show a memorable house party, whether they’re rocking a small club in Brooklyn or a giant festival stage at Coachella. Chk Chk Chk’s saucy sound is often pegged as dance-punk, but add to that hybrid plenty of sweaty funk and R&B for a better idea of what to expect from their recorded material. Live, there’s no telling what might happen. A follow-up to Chk Chk Chk’s 2010 album, Strange Weather, Isn’t It?, is scheduled for release in 2013.

David Williams

David Williams travels a long stretch of highway between Torrey and Salt Lake City in an ancient Subaru packed with just about everything he needs in this world, including a beat-up guitar from which he manages to wrestle the most expansive, heartbreakingly beautiful sounds. Typically a solo performer, he teams up at EVE 2012 with three of Utah’s most skilled soulful, hip-hop-minded jazz musicians to pump up the volume of his sweet folk songs. The Joshua Payne Trio, featuring Joshua Payne (guitar), Dan Thomas (drums), and Ron Harrell (upright bass), can be heard each weekend at the Grand America Hotel Lobby Lounge as well as in various late-night venues that welcome classy revisions of crunk classics.

Night Sweats

Close your eyes and Night Sweats might conjure a young Ian Curtis if the Joy Division singer had lived long enough to explore the many possibilities new technology affords to forward-thinkers like Utah’s Scott Selfridge, the multi-instrumentalist who spearheads the brooding-yet-dynamic electronic six-piece. Though still working on their first recorded material, Night Sweats has amassed an impressive following on the strength of the visceral live experience. Open your eyes to see how the layered percussion, synth, and strings come together.

No-Nation Orchestra

No-Nation Orchestra began as an army of one with Stephen Chai feeding his computer a steady diet of jazz, punk and Afrobeat. Now a cavalry of talented musicians helps Chai realize the infectious pulse of Fugazi-meets-Fela Kuti by executing songs off of their five-song EP with the intensity of a sweat-soaked James Brown. As the title track of their debut suggests, the audience always leaves wanting More, More, More.
