Salt Lake City, UT (ABC4 Sports) - The University of Utah graduation takes place this Thursday. The commencement speaker is former Ute quarterback Alex Smith, now in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs.

"I am giving the commencement speech," said Smith. "I'm humbled to give it. It's been sitting in the back of my mind all off-season. It will be a great challenge and I'm looking forward to it. Obviously its a big honor"

Smith was asked by the President's Office a while back, and he says he was flattered by the invitation, although its not really his cup of tea.

"I'm excited about it, it will be something different, I don't do a ton of public speaking, especially in front of that many people."

Smith has stayed close to the U since leaving for the NFL, donating money for the new athletic weight room.

"I think all of our alma maters have a special place for all of us, but certainly for me. I wasn't highly recruited, then gave me an opportunity, and I don't think I would be where I am today if I hadn't made that decision and didn't go there."

As for his speech, he gave us a brief insight to what he would be telling the graduates.

"They should work really hard on running fast and throwing the ball far, and they'll have a great future ahead of them."

Great advice!
