Cecilia Higgins gave up her son Richard Walker Higgins for adoption when he was just one year old. Higgins said, “I didn’t have a job. I hadn’t even finished high school so for me it was the only option.”
Richie now goes by the name of John Harper. He lives in Roy with his wife and 7-year-old step-daughter. For the last 20 years he’s been looking for his mother, father and younger brother who was also given up for adoption.
Harper said, "Not knowing if they wanted anything to do with me. Not knowing if they were still married or they had other kids."
His answer came earlier this year when an internet search turned up his father.
"I googled his name and came up with a list of 15 to 20 different Richard Higgins,” said Harper.
John’s wife, Cynthia Harper said, "He called every one and the last one was his dad and I was just like wow!"
John met his father and his brother for the first time in October.
Harper said, "It felt like I had a great weight lifted off my shoulder nothing could compare to it."
Except maybe meeting his mother for the first time; even though John had his father and brother back in this life he was still missing his mom and his mother was missing him.
Higgins said, "I always wondered did I do the right thing? Were they okay, were they alive, were they happy?”
She got her answer three months ago when she found John on Facebook, married with a family of his own.
Cynthia Harper said, "It was a lot of relief that they found each other finally after so long."
That relief will turn into joy when John and his mother meet for the first time tomorrow.
Harper said, "Being able to meet my mother for the first time during the holidays is..I consider that a Christmas miracle and early Christmas present."
