The Cold Turkey Run

The Great American Smokeout encourages everyone to quit smoking, even if it's for the day.
Utah County’s Cold Turkey 5k Run and the Great American Smokeout

Why: Each year, more than 1,100 Utah adults die as a result of their own smoking. The Utah County Health Department (UCHD) wants to remind Utahns, especially Utah County residents, about the importance of quitting and the Great American Smokeout is a great time to do it; since that’s a day designated by the American Cancer Society every year (for the past 36 years) encouraging smokers to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.

What:As part of the Great American Smokeout, the Utah County Health Department is sponsoring a Cold Turkey 5k run to show support for those who have quit smoking, want to quit, and those who plan to never start smoking. Each participant who has set a quit date during the week of the Great American Smokeout and contacts the Utah Tobacco Quit Line (1.800.QUIT.NOW) will receive a free frozen turkey at the run. The call is free and confidential.

One of our participants who has agreed to make a quit date next week during the Great American Smokeout is Judy Berrocal. She has smoked for approximately 23 years. One of the reasons Judy decided to quit is because of a Utah County support group she joined called Addict to Athlete. The support group is designed to help addicts of any kind find sobriety and serenity through exercise, especially running. Judy wants to be able to have the endurance to keep up with the group which is hard when you smoke. That is why she has chosen to quit smoking. If Judy could offer any advice to other smokers interested in quitting it would be to find a good support system.

Currently over 520 people have registered for the race. Although registration for the run closed on Friday November 2nd, Utah County residents are still invited to participate if they would like.

When: Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 9 AM (check-in will begin at 8 AM)

Where:The run will start and finish at the Utah County Historic Courthouse (University Ave and Center St in Provo)
