Stores get ready to open early Thanksgiving Thursday

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - The Black Friday frenzy is just hours away and eager shoppers looking for those deep discounts are already lining up... ready to pounce the aisles for their most coveted purchase.

New this year, several major retailers are opening doors early on Thanksgiving night. ABC 4 found eager shoppers sleeping while waiting in the Kmart line already.

“To buy electronics,” said Artemio Hernandez. “I'm looking for TV, for 60 inch TV.”

Kmart is one of 200 retailers big and small opening doors across the country this Thanksgiving. Wal-Mart, Toys 'R Us, and Sears are also offering special pre-Black Friday deals opening at 8 pm.

Shopko and Target will open at 9 p.m. One family is taking the early opening seriously, taking three-hours shifts outside of one Salt Lake City Target. “It's a little cold, but I’m hoping it doesn't get too bad, but I'm pretty excited about the whole thing, get some cool stuff,” said Ryan Martinez.

Target is expected to see a rush several times throughout the night and into the morning. “When we open up at 9 o'clock we do have a sale going on at that time and we also have a sale starting at 4 am so that's to help drive business again at that point,” said Randall Miller, Target Team Leader.

Employees of two of the major retailers threatened to disrupt holiday plans.

Target employees upset with the early opening started an online petition asking Target to take the high road and keep the stores closed on the holiday. It currently has more than 371,000 signatures.

At Wal-Mart workers upset with a labor dispute are threatening a walkout at 28 stores across the country. None of the stores in Utah will be affected.

Despite the pushback from some employees shoppers ABC4 spoke with can't wait to get those Thanksgiving Thursday deals.

“I just wanted the big discounts, this is like almost for free tonight, this is going to be exciting,” said Bobbie Montoya.

Also opening doors Thursday is the Tanger Outlet Mall in Park City at 10 pm. For a full list of retailers opening Thursday, click here.
