SYRACUSE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - An anonymous passerby took action when he saw smoke pouring from a Syracuse home early Wednesday morning.

The fire happened at a home near 3800 South 550 West in Syracuse.

Crews were able to put the fire out quickly before it did too much damage.

The fire began in the garage and damaged part of the attic of the home on 3800 South 550 West.

At first, fire officials thought there was no one inside the home, but later told ABC 4 that an unidentified stranger was driving to work on Gentile Street one block away when he saw the smoke.

Syracuse fire chief Craig Cottrell said the stranger turned around and went into the house through a back door and found a teenage boy in his room getting dressed.

The man told the boy about the fire grabbed the family dog and the got out of the house while other neighbors called 911.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
