84-Year-old speedskater shares journey

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – On Sunday, speedskaters from all over the world gathered at the Utah Olympic Park in Kearns for the annual international speedskating sprint games.

Included among the competitors was “Super Joe,” Joe Kello, an 84-year-old speedskater from Las Vegas.

As a kid, Kello developed a love for skating the second he put on a pair of skates. Joe spent most of his adult years between Nevada and Butte, Montana and it wasn’t until last year Kello got interested in speedskating competitions after a trip to the beehive state.

Once getting to Salt Lake City, Kello headed over to a local speed shop and got outfitted with new skates, clothes and hired a trainer. The next thing he knew he was in speedskating competitions.

“I had a whole new outlook on what I wanted to do. Next year I intend to come up here again, for whatever competition there is and the following year go to Russia,” said Kello.

While most Americans would admit to the fact age can be scary and many don’t look forward to birthdays, Kello says he can’t wait to turn 85.

“This is my last year in the 80-84 year old age group; I’m probably the only person in America 84 that can’t wait to be 85.”

Once Kello hits the young age of 85 he can bump up to a whole new competing category and get away from some very steep competition from Norway. But Joe says this new adventure in life brings much more than some friendly competition.

“I’ve met so many people; I’ve enjoyed meeting everyone from all over the world with the same interests, speedskating.”

And while Kello has met many people across his journey he says his wife has been his rock, staying right by his side. Kello says she’s even agreed to give up their original plan to head to Washington State.

“I told her if you like, pick out any cruise you like and ill be glad to buy you a ticket but I’m straying right here.”

Kello may have been the oldest competitor on Sunday but he did very well, taking home second place.
