Lyme Disease on the Rise in Utah

Dr. Petersen from Holtorf Medical Group describes what symptoms to look for with Lyme Disease.
Here in Utah Lyme Disease is something we all need to be aware of especially with all the outdoor activities that happen in the summer time. The Center for Disease Control announced recently that Lyme Disease is actually 10 times more common in the U.S. than previously thought and is a serious condition transmitted by the bite of an infected deer tick.

So what symptoms do you need to look for that can alert you to a potential problem? Dr Petersen from Holtorf Medical Group, says that early signs of infection include swelling of lymph nodes near the tick bite, headache and general achiness. However, If diagnosed and treated in the early stages, the disease can usually be cured with antibiotics. The symptoms generally begin to appear within 1-2 weeks after being bitten and often begin with a telltale red rash, or a “bulls-eye” ring around the site of the bite.

If you do have Lyme Disease or know someone who does there is a local support group, The Utah Lyme Disease Alliance, for patients and their families. More information can be found at: www.utahlyme.org
