Let's Fill the Food Bank!

Utah food bank needs your help! Learn what items are best to donate, and how you can get involved with Hunger Action Month.

Hunger Action Month

Ginette Bott, the Chief Development Officer at Utah Food Bank joined GTU on Monday to talk about this year’s event. Utah Food Bank needs your donations for the Statewide Hunger Action Month Food Drive. The upcoming statewide 2014 Hunger Action Month Food Drive will be held on Saturday, September 27th from 9 AM to 1 PM, with Walmart stores across the state serving as drop-off locations.

Food can also be donated to any of Utah Food Bank’s 130 partner agencies and local food pantries across the state or at Utah Food Bank’s warehouse at 3150 S. 900 W. in Salt Lake. Utah Food Bank is requesting that the public donate non-perishable, nutritious food items, especially those low in sodium and sugar.
The drive is encouraging businesses, church groups, schools, individuals and families to organize food drives in their communities and bring the donations they collect.
For more details about other ways you can get involved in Hunger Action Month, including a list of Hunger Action Month Food Drive drop-off locations, please visit their website.

In addition to the drive September is Hunger Action Month. In September, Feeding America’s nationwide network of food banks (of which Utah Food Bank is a member) unites to urge individuals to take action in their communities. The goal of national Hunger Action Month is to mobilize the public to act on behalf of those in need, and is an opportunity to create a movement throughout September that has a real and lasting impact on our mission of Fighting Hunger Statewide.

Kick off Hunger Action Month at Beating Hunger by a Mile! On September 4th Utah Food Bank will construct a mile-long line of food along State Street from the City & County Building to the State Capitol. Donations can be dropped off at Washington Square until 2:00 PM and will be used to help accomplish this feat!

Orange is the color of hunger, so a great way to show your support is by doing what you can to “Go Orange” for hunger on national “Go Orange” day, September 4th.

Hunger is a bigger problem in Utah than most people realize. 472,000 Utahns are not sure where their next meal will come from. 1 in 5 Utah kids will likely miss a meal today due to lack of resources. Utah Food Bank distributed over 36 million pounds of food last year to a statewide network of 130 partner food pantries and agencies. Utah Food Bank’s mission is fighting hunger statewide. Those who need help are our friends and neighbors. You can’t always tell by looking at someone if they are going hungry.

How can you help?
Give Food – take non-perishable food donations to Utah Food Bank location, any many major grocery stores statewide, or to a local pantry.
The food banks especially need nutritious foods low in sugar and sodium.

Give Time –Last year we used over 103,000 volunteer hours, or the equivalent of over 49 full time employees. By volunteering, you are helping feed more people by allowing money to be spent on food rather than staffing. We have volunteer projects for people of almost all ages and physical capabilities.

Give Money – Because of our purchasing power, we can turn every $1 donation into $8 of goods and services. Visit UTAHFOODBANK.ORG to donate.

Hunger in America Study (according to a recent Feeding America study):

36% of the recipients of our services are children under 18. 1/3 of people utilizing our services have had a family member who has worked within the past month.

In the U.S. 5 million kids qualify for school lunch programs. In Utah, 96% of the families they serve have children who qualify for free or reduced lunch. 71% of food bank recipients have to choose between food and medical care. 60% of recipients have to choose between food and housing costs. Utah Food Bank is one of a handful of food banks who distribute food free of charge. 86% of our partner agencies report that they would be majorly affected if they did not receive food from us.
