Utah vets not taking advantage of benefits

- SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Sometimes the struggles are not over when soldiers return home.

If you are a veteran in Utah, you may not be getting the help you need.

“I am a veteran but have never received any benefits,” Elbert Dansie, a U.S. Army Veteran said.

He said he has never had to the need to ask the department for help.

Terry Schow, the Executive Director for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs in Utah, said he is trying to get the word out about the help the government offers.

“We’voe even got World War II Vets who were injured in 1945 who can barely walk today who don't know they can file an increase in benefits,” Schow said.

Utah falls below the national average for veterans who are getting compensation and pension.

Benefits are not just for veterans, but for survivors or dependents too.
