Ogden pushes crime tracking website in light of crime increase

- OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - An increase in car burglaries and bike thefts last month has prompted Ogden Police to notify the public and introduce a website where residents can track crime.

Deputy Director of Administration John Harvey with the Ogden Police Department said the website is www.raidsonline.com. It is used by agencies across the country and in Utah, it is also used by West Jordan and West Valley City.

Harvey said police are informing the public as to the types of crimes trending upwards so residents can be the eyes and ears for officers on the streets.

Car burglaries saw a 93% increase in Ogden in one month. In August, there were 45 reported car burglaries. The number drastically increased to 87 in September. Many of the car burglaries were crimes of opportunity as owners left the doors unlocked. Harvey advised the public to remove valuables from your car, lock the doors and park the car in a secure area like a garage.

In addition, a number of bike thefts were reported around the city. Many were high end bikes left unsecured in yards by their owners.

At raidsonline.com, residents can track the hot spots of where crime is happening by looking at maps and crime data. Harvey said residents can also use the website to track a crime a submit a tip on it.

Tips can also be submitted via the Ogden Police Department's website and by text message. To text: send your tips to 274637 (CRIMES on most cell phones), then type your message and include the word TIPACOP and send.
