EXCLUSIVE: Burglar caught on camera breaking into cars in West Jordan

- WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4 News) – Thanksgiving night had people shopping for deals, while others were on the prowl for steals in West Jordan.

A hooded burglar was caught on camera breaking into cars near 8300 South and 4900 West.

The burglar had no idea the car owners, Tyler Francis and Megan Lettington, were watching his every move inside their house on surveillance.

“First I was looking over thinking this just can’t be happening,” Francis said. “Then I realized it was for real. There really was somebody out there.”

Francis got upset. He stood up and opened his living room window to yell out at the young man.

The video shows the burglar getting scared and running off. Three other people run away too.

The couple believes the young men likely tried to open other cars in the neighborhood.

“I think it has something to do with the holidays because the last one was a holiday as well,” Lettington said.

Lettington is referring to vandalism in the same area on Labor Day. Dozens of cars had their tires slashed.

“We don’t have money for them to keep taking our stuff or vandalizing it,” she said.

An arrest was made in the September tire slashing case, but Francis believes the same person is behind this attempted burglary.

The recent rash of crime doesn’t sit well with him.

“I don’t think I would move,” he said. “It would really make my life difficult if [the burglars] actually started taking stuff.”

He is thankful their security system came in handy Thursday night, but he knows they might not be so lucky next time.

“It kind of just makes you nervous,” Lettington added.

West Jordan Police are investigating the case. They have stepped up patrols in the neighborhood since the September tire slashing incident.

The man in the video is described as a thin white male in his late teens or early 20’s. If you have any information call West Jordan Police at (801) 840-4000.
