Firework sales down amid restrictions and wildfire dangers

- OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 News) – This is the time of year when firework sales should be exploding, but lately vendors say it has been kind of a dud.

It’s been a tough season for firework sellers. Stands are usually packed with people, especially during the 4th of July week.

Heidi Jo Roberston, a firework vendor, said people are concerned about the fire danger and not buying.

“There are a lot of people who are just not stopping by,” Robertson said. “By now, we would have sold three times what we normally sell.”

Strict fire restrictions and the threat of potential wildfires have people concerned. The stands have fire restrictions posted for the public.

John Mazur said he is scaling back his planned fireworks display this year. He is concerned about the fire restrictions too.

“I’m not buying the big fireworks that shoot up higher just for worry of those things,” Mazur said.

Vendors hope sales start to boom soon. Until then, the big box explosives will keep collecting dust while folks worry about the fire danger.

“People are real skeptical and worried about it,” Robertson added.
