Dana Williamson joined us today to spread awareness on how you can get active in your communities by volunteering to feed the hungry across the U.S. with Food Rescue US.
Food Rescue US is the food rescue launched in Salt Lake City that is committed to ending American food insecurity by engaging volunteers to transfer fresh, usable, excess food from grocers, restaurants and other sources to hungry people across the US.
There are over 50 million food insecure Americans that throw away approximately 40 billion meals a year. The amount of wasted food is almost the amount to feed the food insecure people 3 meals a day for a year.
In Utah, 1 in 8 Utahns are at risk of missing a meal. It is projected to be 400,000 people. 1 in 6 Utah children are unaware of where the next meal is coming from.
A leading food waste expert, Tristan Stuart stated, “hunger is not a supply problem but rather a distribution problem”.
Food donors are protected by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act which protects donors who donate food in good faith.
