Memorizing multiplication tables can be a frustrating experience for your kids. Planning Playtime had this experience with her own children, until a teacher came up with a way that will make math not seem too hard.
Amy Nielson says the answer is Skip Counting. Nielson says, "Skip counting is counting at intervals of whichever number you choose. For example, if I was to skip count by 7 I would count, 7, 14, 21… and so on. Using this method you can do single digit multiplication with ease. Say the teacher asks you to multiply 4 x 7 = __. You simply skip count 7’s, 4 times, 7, 14, 21, 28. The answer to 4 x 7 = 28."
By putting the skip counting to popular songs, memorization becomes easier than ever. The music helps them learn the numbers quickly and remember them longer, giving them a leg up in their future math.
Amy and her daughters have made YouTube videos of the songs.
