Sherri Candland, author "Blue Balloons", tells her story behind her new children's book:

I have always wanted to be a writer ever since I was a little girl. I always say I suffer from Dr. Seuss disease, thinking and speaking in rhyme, so children’s books were the perfect fit for me.

Inspiration for Blue Balloons- I was walking in a park late on evening and someone had had a party or some kind of celebration in the park-everyone had gone home but they left these blue balloons tied to a rail. I instantly snapped the strings and let them go.

The next morning I couldn’t get it out of my head-how lonely the balloons must have been and how relieved when they were floating away-and I sat down and wrote the book.

Process for getting published was so difficult. One publisher wanted the book, but would not use my atrist’s illustrations and I just kept getting rejection after rejection. Finally I borrowed the money and published it myself-my way.

I had been reading the book from the typewritten pages at bed time for over a year…when I got the first copy of the actual hardbound book, fully and beautifully illustrated-well I read it to my two daughters that night at bedtime and felt the most accomplished I had in my entire life. A dream come true.

It is a tradition in our family that we let the balloons go after a celebration-we all make a wish and send them on their way. This book is part of who we are and our family.

I am a single mom of two beautiful daughters and I own a social media/marketing company. I have written articles for the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News, love yoga, paddle boarding and my girls more than anything!
